Class Reflection

Wow! I can't believe that our class is coming to an end already; it seems like we just began. Overall I really enjoyed the class. Before the class began, I really did not think that I would really learn anything new because I used Google during my senior of high school and all the way through college. But, I was totally wrong, I learned a few new different types of technology that can aid in and outside of my classroom. Also, it was nice to get a refresher on some of the Google tools; I did not realize it but I actually forgot a few things. Over the course of these six weeks, I saw my comfortability with the technology presented to us improving each and every week. I really like how each week our class would focus on something new so that we could get a wide variety of possible tools to be brought into the classroom. I definitely feel that I will use many of the tools that we learned about in the near future with my students. When I found out that we would be using Twitter, I k...

Should Physical Education Be Taken Out of Our Schools?

Today there is what seems like a never-ending debate over childhood obesity. Many people say that childhood obesity is caused by the over-consumption of fast foods, sugar, and a lack of exercise. If childhood obesity is such an epidemic then why are some schools making the decision to eliminated physical education from their curriculum? I recently just finished my first outreach assignment as a certified Athletic Trainer at a high school in Chicago. After spending some time there and talking to the athletes and coaches, I learned that they do not have physical education in their curriculum because those in charge believe that it was not important and thus if it not in the everyday curriculum the students have more opportunities to take more classes. Like this school, many other schools are faced with the same debate; they are faced with the decision as to have students take more academic classes or to have that 45- 1 hour of physical activity. I think that schools should ...

Social Media

Image
Today there is the never-ending debate as to whether or not social media is a positive or negative thing. Typically I use social media as a way to connect with friends that I do not get to see on a regular basis. Through social media, I am able to see what important events are going on in their lives or they had a great time somewhere. Also when I am on social media, I usually am drawn to different quotes, bible verses, or funny videos with animals or people. Social media also help me pass the time when I am bored or waiting for an appointment or meeting to begin. I believe that social meeting should be used to connect with others, who may be far away or those who are in the same profession as you. Today, our youth is consistently using their phones, tablets, etc. to access social media to connect with one another; I think they are really missing out on the so-called typical school interaction between their peers.  As I mentioned before, I really like ins...

Flipped Learning

Before this week, I have not heard of flipped learning until we discussed it in class. Flipped learning should not be used all of the time; it is recommended for this type of learning to be used a few times a week within the classroom environment. The concept of flipped learning consists of having students watch a lector/lesson on their own outside of class and then come to class the next day to discuss that particular topic. Over the course of my educational career, I struggled to find out what type of learner I was. At first, I thought that I was an audio learner, but that quickly became totally wrong. After many trails and error with different styles of learning, I discovered that I was a visual learner. Ever since that moment, I discovered my learning style; my performance in and outside the classroom began to change dramatically for the better. I started noticing that I needed someone to explain a topic while showing me how to do it step by step; this followed me into my underg...

The 4C's

In our class meeting this week we talk about the 4C's and how this model can help better our students' education. The 4C's consist of communication- sharing thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions; collaboration- working together to reach a goal, putting talent, expertise, and smarts to work; critical thinking- looking at problems in a new way, linking learning across subjects and disciplines; creativity- trying new approaches to get things done equals innovation and invention. In order to test this theory out,we were put into small groups (2-3 people) and instructed to making any creation with Play-do by only using one hand. During this little exercise, we had to use communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. All of the 4C's came into play because we all need to be on the same page when creating our masterpiece so that we each were not doing our own thing. Also we each needed to be creative because no wanted to make the same thing as another, ev...

Technology is changing education

Technology is forever changing in the world today. These changes like it or not will effect our students in their personal and educational experiences either positive or negatively. Some of the positive effects that technology has on education are that our students get to learn in new and advanced ways, having the ability to get information in the matter of seconds, and gives students the opportunity to get tutoring at the drop of a hat. These advancements allow students to learn through the use of different websites such as Quizlet, Kahoot, Kahn academy,YouTube; which give them a change of pace and allows students to have fun while learning. Also through the advancements in technology our students are able to learn on their own outside the classroom through the usage of how to videos, web-seminars, and social media being able to connect with different educators and their fellow peers. On the hand technology can have a negative effect on our students education. Even though students can...
